A GRAVE DELIVERED, A NATION MOCKED: THE SILENCE OF NIGERIA’S WATCHDOGS

The recent incident in Katsina State, where armed bandits handed over the corpse of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar to government officials without facing any arrest or confrontation, has raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of Nigeria’s security apparatus. This editorial examines the implications of that event and argues that it reflects a significant weakness in the ability of Nigerian leaders to protect citizens.

The Facts of the Incident

On June 13, 2026, bandits emerged from a forest in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State and delivered the body of Major General Rabe Abubakar (retd.) to state officials. The retired general had been abducted alongside his wife on May 30, 2026. According to multiple credible reports, the bandits were neither arrested nor engaged by security forces during or after the handover. They simply left the scene and retreated into the forest without any resistance.

The Core Problem

The inability to apprehend these criminals, despite their open movement and direct contact with government representatives, demonstrates a fundamental failure of state authority. Security agencies are expected to protect all citizens, including former senior military officers. When armed criminals can abduct, detain, and ultimately cause the death of a retired general—and then return his body without facing any legal consequences—it signals that the state has lost control over its territory.

Furthermore, the general’s wife remains in captivity at the time of this writing. The family has publicly stated that they do not know the circumstances under which the body was recovered. This lack of transparency and continued hostage situation compounds the tragedy.

Implications for National Security

This incident is not isolated. It fits a broader pattern of rising insecurity across northern Nigeria, where banditry, kidnapping, and extrajudicial killings have become commonplace. However, the targeting of a retired military officer of high rank is particularly alarming. If the state cannot protect its own former generals, ordinary citizens have little reason to expect protection.

Security analysts have noted that this event underscores a severe breakdown in regional deterrence. The bandits appear to operate with impunity, dictating terms to government officials. No arrests have been reported, and no public statement has explained why security forces did not intervene to capture the perpetrators.

Conclusion

The failure to arrest or confront the bandits who delivered General Abubakar’s body is a clear indicator of weakness among Nigerian leaders in fulfilling their most basic duty: protecting lives. Until security agencies can demonstrate the ability to apprehend criminals who openly flout state authority, the safety of all Nigerians remains in doubt. Citizens are right to demand accountability and a renewed commitment to effective law enforcement. Without such action, the message to criminals is dangerously clear: they may act without fear of consequence.
