In a dramatic and unexpected diplomatic breakthrough, the Trump administration has finalized a memorandum of understanding with the Islamic Republic of Iran, bringing an immediate end to months of escalating military tensions across the Middle East. The agreement, confirmed by senior U.S. officials and Iran’s mission to the United Nations late Sunday, paves the way for the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz and a halt to all hostilities, including the conflict in Lebanon.
President Trump announced the deal in a brief statement from the White House, calling it “a victory for peace and stability.” While the text of the memorandum has not yet been publicly released, sources familiar with the negotiations outline three core components.
First, all military operations between the two nations and their respective allies are to cease “immediately and permanently.” This includes a halt to the ongoing war in Lebanon, where Israeli forces and Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militant group, have been engaged in fierce fighting. The Lebanese ceasefire, initially brokered by the U.S. on June 3rd, is now formally incorporated into the broader U.S.-Iran framework.
Second, Iran has committed to “never develop, purchase, or otherwise acquire a nuclear warhead,” according to a draft summary shared by Pakistan’s Prime Minister, who helped mediate the talks. In return, the U.S. has agreed to end its naval blockade of the Persian Gulf, allowing the Strait of Hormuz – through which nearly 20% of global oil passes – to reopen.
“The strait will be toll-free and open to all international shipping,” President Trump said. “I have ordered the immediate lifting of the blockade, and full access will be restored by the signing ceremony.”
That ceremony is scheduled for Friday, June 19th, in Switzerland, where formal signatures will be exchanged. However, the most contentious issues – including long-term sanctions relief and the future of Iran’s civilian nuclear program – have been deferred to follow-up negotiations over the next 60 days.
The announcement has drawn a cautious response from allies. Israeli Prime Minister’s office released a statement saying it “welcomes any genuine reduction of Iranian aggression” but stressed that “Israel retains the right to defend itself.” Meanwhile, Gulf states have largely praised the reopening of the strait, which had choked oil exports for weeks, sending global prices soaring.
Critics in Washington, however, argue that deferring key issues gives Iran a dangerous breathing space without full verification. Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) called the deal “a dangerous gamble,” while Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said it was “a necessary first step, but the hard work is yet to come.”
As the world watches, all eyes now turn to Bern, where in just five days, the two nations will seal an accord that could reshape the geopolitics of the Middle East – or, if it unravels, plunge it back into chaos. For now, the guns have fallen silent, and the waters of the Hormuz Strait are set to flow free once again.
