The Edo State Police Command has uncovered a false kidnapping case after a married woman, identified as Oluchi, staged her own abduction to demand a ransom of ₦50 million.

Mrs. Oluchi was initially reported missing from the Ikpoba Hill area of Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area in Edo State. Her family, including her daughter Anita who resides in Canada, believed she had been kidnapped and publicly appealed for help. The alleged abductors later reduced the ransom demand to ₦20 million.

Police Investigation and Arrest

The Edo State Police Command launched an investigation and traced the phone number of a male suspect connected to the case. Officers tracked the number to a hotel in the Ubiaroko area of Delta State. Upon entering the hotel room, the police found Oluchi unharmed and in the company of a man identified as her lover.

There was no evidence of abduction or violence. Oluchi was immediately taken into custody along with her lover. The police later confirmed that a total of four suspects have been arrested in connection with the staged kidnapping.

No Ransom Paid

According to the police and family statements, no ransom was ever paid. Funds that had been raised by well-wishers and social groups remain intact and are being returned to the donors.

Family Reaction

The revelation has caused significant distress to the family. Anita, Oluchi's daughter, expressed shock and disappointment in a public statement. She noted that her father has health issues and that the incident has damaged her reputation. She also confirmed that her mother was involved in a romantic relationship outside her marriage.

Statement from Social Club

The Harmony Ladies Club, a social organization to which Anita belongs, had earlier mobilized support for the family. Following the police findings, the club issued a formal statement distancing itself from the act. The club described the situation as a betrayal of trust and confirmed that it no longer associates with the incident.

Police Confirmation

The Edo State Police Command spokesperson, CSP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the arrests and stated that investigations are ongoing. The police have assured the public that all individuals found guilty will face legal consequences.

This case serves as a reminder that false reports of criminal activity divert police resources and cause unnecessary distress to families and communities.
