Amid ongoing public frustration over rising fuel prices in Nigeria, a former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has weighed into the debate, arguing that the global surge in energy costs is a direct consequence of the escalating conflict involving Iran. Omokri has called on Nigerians to halt what he describes as undue condemnation of the country and instead show appreciation for local initiatives, particularly the Dangote Refinery.

In a strongly worded social media post on Thursday, Omokri shared his personal experience in the United States to drive home his point. He claimed that he recently purchased 45 litres of fuel – approximately 12 US gallons – in California for the sum of ₦115,000 (when converted from US dollars at the prevailing exchange rate). The statement is intended to counter the narrative that Nigeria is an isolated case of exorbitant fuel prices.

“I bought 45 litres of fuel (12 US gallons) for ₦115K in California. Stop condemning Nigeria,” Omokri wrote. “Fuel price hike is global due to the Iran war. Appreciate Nigeria and Dangote!”

The comment references the ongoing military tensions in the Middle East, specifically the involvement of Iran, which has disrupted global oil supply chains and led to sharp increases in crude oil prices worldwide. Major economies, including the United States and nations within the European Union, have witnessed record-breaking pump prices in recent months.

Omokri’s remarks have, however, ignited a fresh wave of debate on social media. While a section of Nigerians agreed that global factors are indeed at play, others accused the former presidential aide of oversimplifying the country’s deeper economic issues. Critics argue that Nigeria, as a major oil-producing nation, ought to leverage local refining capacity – such as the newly operational Dangote Refinery – to cushion citizens from external shocks.

The Dangote Refinery, which began production earlier this year, has been touted as a game-changer for Nigeria’s energy sector. Proponents believe that sustained local refining will eventually reduce dependence on imported petroleum products and stabilize domestic prices. Omokri’s call to “appreciate Nigeria and Dangote” appears to be an appeal for patience as the refinery scales up to full capacity.

Political analysts note that while global conflicts undoubtedly affect fuel markets, the average Nigerian consumer is more concerned with the immediate impact on transport costs, food inflation, and daily living expenses. As of this week, petrol prices at various Nigerian filling stations range between ₦700 and ₦900 per litre, depending on the region.

Efforts to reach Omokri for further comments were unsuccessful as of press time. Meanwhile, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has yet to issue an official response to his claims.

As the Iran war continues to roil international energy markets, the debate between global realities and local expectations is unlikely to subite soon. For now, Reno Omokri’s Californian fuel receipt has become the latest flashpoint in Nigeria’s ongoing conversation about economic hardship and national pride.
