Fear and uncertainty have gripped residents of Omugo Community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, as persistent bandit attacks have forced a mass exodus, leaving the once vibrant settlement nearly deserted.
A Facebook user who posted a video of the community on Facebook described a harrowing situation that has driven families from their homes and disrupted every aspect of daily life. According to the witness, repeated incursions by armed bandits have made it impossible for villagers to remain, prompting them to flee in search of safety.
“We had no choice but to run,” the resident recounted. “People abandoned their houses, mosques, churches, schools—everything. The community is no longer what it used to be.”
The attacks, reportedly occurring over an extended period, have created a climate of fear, with many residents unwilling to return despite deep ties to their ancestral homes. Social and economic activities have come to a standstill, as markets remain closed and farmlands lie untended.
Local sources say the situation has worsened due to the absence of adequate security presence, leaving vulnerable communities exposed to repeated assaults. Women, children, and the elderly are among the most affected, now displaced and dependent on relatives or temporary shelters in neighboring areas.
Community leaders have called on both state and federal authorities to urgently intervene, emphasizing the need for increased security deployment and long-term measures to restore peace.
As Omugo stands eerily quiet, its empty streets and abandoned buildings serve as a stark reminder of the growing insecurity affecting rural communities across Nigeria. For displaced residents, hope remains that peace will one day return, allowing them to rebuild their lives and reclaim their homes.
