In separate, heart-wrenching incidents, open water bodies claimed the lives of a teenager and a young child, as confirmed by the state's Fire Service. These weren't isolated events but part of a distressing pattern of drownings in the early months of the year, sounding a desperate alarm for community awareness and preventive action.
The first call came from the Bachirawa area of Ungogo Local Government. An 18-year-old boy, Yusif Malam-Gwani, had drowned. Hours later, another distress call reached the firefighters, this time from Karaye town. There, an 8-year-old child, Abdussalam Ibrahim, was recovered from a well. The Fire Service Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi, detailed the grim retrievals, stating the victims were handed over to community leaders and family, leaving behind unimaginable grief.
Tragically, these February 6th incidents were just the latest in a series. Just five days earlier, on February 1, the Fire Service was called to Wangara Village in Tofa LGA, where they retrieved the body of 3-year-old Abdura'uf Badamasi from a well. The year's first recorded incidents struck even earlier. On January 9, a double tragedy occurred: a 2-year-old boy drowned in a well in Bagwai LGA, and in a separate incident in Kumbotso LGA, a 28-year-old man, Mubarak Sani, also lost his life to a well.

The consistency in these reports—all verified through official statements from the Kano State Fire Service and covered by multiple national news outlets like Peoples Gazette and Punch—paints a clear and urgent picture.
