The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Chibuike Anikpe, in connection with the killing of his 35-year-old girlfriend, Ogochukwu Mmadubugwu, in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of the state.
The police confirmed that the suspect confessed to committing the act, citing suspicion of infidelity and severe financial distress as the reasons behind the crime. The incident, which occurred on December 9, 2025, shocked residents of the area and sparked widespread speculation before police investigations revealed the true circumstances surrounding the killing.
According to the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect was arrested on January 7, 2026, after what he described as careful and detailed investigations by detectives of the command.
False Claims and Misleading Evidence
Following the discovery of the victim’s lifeless body, several reports and rumours circulated within the community and on social media. Many claimed that the killing was linked to a debt issue involving an unnamed creditor, suggesting that the suspect had been attacked over unpaid money.
These claims were further strengthened by a letter allegedly found at the crime scene, which suggested that the suspect had been kidnapped by people demanding repayment of money. However, police investigations later revealed that the letter was fake and deliberately planted by the suspect to mislead investigators.
SP Ikenga stated that the police uncovered inconsistencies in the initial narrative, which led them to intensify their investigation. During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted that he personally wrote and planted the letter in an attempt to divert suspicion away from himself.

The command wishes to inform the public that the claim of kidnapping and debt-related killing is false,the police spokesperson said.
The suspect confessed that the letter was planted by him to deceive the public and frustrate police investigations.
Confession Reveals Personal and Financial Motives
During police questioning, Chibuike Anikpe reportedly confessed to killing his girlfriend after suspecting her of being unfaithful. According to the police, the suspect explained that the relationship had become tense due to emotional strain and financial pressure.
He told investigators that he had invested a large amount of money in the victim, including supporting her financially and helping her set up a business. The investment, he claimed, left him deeply indebted and financially unstable.
Police said the suspect described himself as emotionally distressed and overwhelmed by the combination of jealousy, anger, and financial hardship. This emotional state, according to his confession, led to the violent confrontation that resulted in the victim’s death.
The suspect admitted that on December 9, 2025, during an argument, he stabbed Ogochukwu Mmadubugwu in the neck with a knife. She reportedly died from the injuries sustained in the attack.
Community Shock and Police Warning
The killing has left residents of Ekwulobia in shock, with many expressing sadness over the violent end to what appeared to be a private relationship dispute. Community members described the incident as tragic and avoidable, calling for better awareness about peaceful conflict resolution and emotional control.
In response to the incident, the Anambra State Police Command used the opportunity to caution members of the public against taking the law into their own hands or resorting to violence when faced with personal or relationship challenges.
SP Ikenga urged individuals experiencing emotional stress, financial difficulties, or domestic disputes to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving their issues. He also encouraged families, friends, and neighbours to report early signs of domestic violence or serious conflict to security agencies.
Many violent crimes can be prevented if early warning signs are reported and addressed,the police spokesperson said.

Next Steps in the Case
The suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue. The police confirmed that he will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation and after all necessary legal procedures have been completed.
The Anambra State Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice for the victim and maintaining public safety across the state. The command also warned against spreading unverified information, stressing that false reports can hinder investigations and cause unnecessary panic.
