Iran's judiciary executed a man convicted of espionage for Israel's Mossad intelligence agency on Wednesday, state media reported, marking the latest in a series of high-profile executions that underscore the intense and lethal shadow war between the two adversaries.
The executed individual was identified as Ali Ardestani. According to an official report from the judiciary's Mizan Online news agency, Ardestani was found guilty of
corruption on earth through espionage for the Zionist regime.The sentence was carried out by hanging.
Details of the Allegations and Execution
Iranian authorities provided specific details about the charges. They alleged that Ardestani had been recruited by Mossad and was tasked with gathering intelligence on sensitive locations within Iran.
The convict collected and provided classified information to the Mossad spy service about Iran's strategic centers,the judiciary stated. His activities reportedly included photographing and videotaping secure sites and transmitting the information online to his handlers.
The judiciary further claimed that Ardestani's motivation was financial and material gain. Mizan Online reported that he had agreed to cooperate in exchange for a promised reward of $1 million and a visa to live in the United Kingdom. The Supreme Court of Iran upheld the verdict, leading to the execution at a prison in Sistan and Baluchestan province.

The execution of Ali Ardestani is not an isolated event but part of a pronounced and accelerating crackdown by Iran's security apparatus. Since a major military confrontation with Israel in June of the previous year, Iranian courts have issued a string of death sentences for alleged spies.

Retribution for the Actions of the Zionist Regime Against the Iranian Nation.This legislation mandates the death penalty for any Iranian citizen convicted of espionage on behalf of Israel or the United States, effectively eliminating judicial discretion for such crimes. Judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir highlighted this shift, stating the new law
specifies the punishment for espionage for the Zionist regime as execution.

This legal change has provided the framework for recent executions. Just weeks before Ardestani's death, on December 20, 2025, Iran executed another man, Aghil Keshavarz, on identical charges of spying for Mossad. Earlier in the year, individuals such as Ismail Fakhri were also executed for alleged ties to "the Zionist regime." Independent observers, including the Norway-based group Iran Human Rights, estimate that at least 10 to 12 people have been executed on espionage charges linked to Israel or the U.S. since mid-2025.
Criticism and Lack of Judicial Transparency
These executions have drawn sharp criticism from international human rights organizations. Groups like Amnesty International and Iran Human Rights have consistently warned that trials for espionage and national security crimes in Iran are deeply flawed and lack basic standards of due process.
Critics point out that these trials are typically held behind closed doors in Revolutionary Courts, with defendants having severely limited access to lawyers of their choosing. The convictions often rely heavily on confessions that rights groups allege are obtained under duress, torture, or through prolonged solitary confinement. The Iranian government has not provided independent observers or international media access to verify the legal proceedings or the evidence presented against the accused.
Geopolitical Context of a Covert War
The executions occur against a backdrop of long-running and increasingly overt covert operations between Iran and Israel. For years, the two states have engaged in a shadow conflict involving cyber-attacks, assassinations of scientists, sabotage of nuclear and military facilities, and strikes on shipping. Each nation routinely accuses the other of orchestrating these attacks.
