In a significant recognition of scientific excellence, Nigerian-born applied mathematician and computational scientist Joshuai Adeleke has been elected a Fellow of the National Institute of Professional Engineers and Scientists (FNIPES), a high honour awarded for his groundbreaking work in mathematical modeling for nuclear energy, Physics, and materials science. The fellowship, announced in December 2025, highlights the growing global impact of African researchers in advanced technological fields.

Adeleke's research sits at the complex intersection of mathematics, Nuclear Physics, and high-performance computing. He specializes in developing advanced mathematical models and large-scale simulations that help decode quantum interactions within materials and nuclear scattering processes. His computational work provides critical insights that are difficult or impossible to obtain through physical experimentation alone, aiding in the advancement of nuclear energy safety and efficiency.

A Recognition of Elite Contribution

The FNIPES fellowship is a selective professional accolade. According to reports, the institute awards fellowship status to fewer than 10% of its candidates annually, reserving it for individuals who have demonstrated "outstanding contributions to the advancement of knowledge in their respective fields". In an interview with The Punch Newspaper upon receiving the honour, Adeleke stated,

My election as a Fellow of the National Institute of Professional Engineers and Scientists is a testament to the rigorous and impactful research we conduct in applied mathematics and computational science.

His election underscores the international relevance of his work, which is conducted in collaboration with some of the world's most renowned research institutions. Adeleke has actively partnered with U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories, including Los Alamos National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory, where his models contribute to vital national and scientific projects.

From Nigerian Roots to Global Scientific Impact

Adeleke's academic journey exemplifies a global pursuit of knowledge. He earned his first degree in Mathematics from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, laying a strong foundation before expanding his expertise across Europe. He furthered his studies with a Master’s degree in Mathematical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, Italy, followed by another Master’s in Mathematical Engineering from the University of Technology, Brno, Czech Republic. This unique educational path equipped him with a robust, international perspective on problem-solving.

Reflecting on his trajectory, Adeleke emphasized the practical application of his expertise.

My work involves the application of advanced mathematical models and computational techniques to solve complex problems in nuclear scattering, material science, and quantum systems simulations,
he told The Punch. His research is not purely theoretical; it is designed to address concrete challenges in energy and material science, leveraging supercomputing to push the boundaries of what is possible in simulation.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Scientists

This recognition carries profound significance for the STEM community in Nigeria and across Africa. Adeleke’s achievement serves as a powerful counter-narrative, demonstrating that African scientists are at the forefront of tackling some of the world's most intricate scientific and technological challenges. His career path—from Nigeria to elite laboratories—provides a tangible blueprint for aspiring mathematicians and physicists on the continent.

Techpoint Africa, reporting on the fellowship, noted that such honours help to

spotlight the critical yet often underrepresented contributions of African scientists in global advanced research ecosystems.
Adeleke’s success is a milestone that reinforces the importance of investing in advanced scientific education and fostering international research collaborations.

As the world continues to grapple with energy challenges and seeks deeper understanding of material properties, the work of computational scientists like Joshuai Adeleke becomes increasingly vital. His election as an FNIPES Fellow in December 2025 is more than a personal achievement; it is a beacon of excellence, highlighting the essential role of mathematical ingenuity in shaping a safer and more technologically advanced future. His story confirms that today's most pressing scientific problems are being solved by truly global teams, with African intellect playing a central role.
