In a decision announced just forty-eight hours before the nation's most significant annual observance, the Federal Government has cancelled the traditional Independence Day parade scheduled for October 1st, 2025, marking Nigeria's 65th year as a sovereign nation. The move, communicated officially on Monday, September 29th, has redirected the tone of the anniversary celebrations, emphasizing a more subdued observance while maintaining the day's national significance.
The announcement was delivered by Segun Imohiosen, the Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF). In the official statement, Imohiosen confirmed,
The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria's 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm.The statement notably omitted a specific reason for the last-minute cancellation of the parade, an event that typically features a military display, cultural performances, and an address by the President at the Eagle Square in Abuja.
Despite the cancellation of the central parade, the government was quick to clarify that the anniversary itself remains a pivotal moment for national reflection. The same official release stressed that
all other programmes slated for the Independence Anniversary will remain in effect.This indicates that other activities, which could include church services, symposiums, and cultural exhibitions, will proceed as planned under the official anniversary theme: "Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation."
The government expressed regret "over any inconvenience caused by this cancellation" to "Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests." Furthermore, the statement incorporated a political appeal, urging
Nigerians to support the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in making Nigeria a greater nation,thereby linking the national celebration to the current administration's agenda.
Concurrent with the parade cancellation, the Federal Government has reaffirmed that October 1st, 2025, will remain a public holiday. This declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement from the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani. The Minister used the occasion to congratulate Nigerians and call for unity. He
urged citizens to uphold the values of patriotism, unity, and resilience that have kept the country together since independence in 1960,and encouraged the populace to
keep faith in the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which is anchored on national rebirth, economic transformation, and collective prosperity.
