In Nigeria's often turbulent political landscape, where speaking out against those in power can be risky, two organizations consistently stand up to defend the people's right to express themselves: the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and Amnesty International Nigeria. Their recent, bold move to challenge President Bola Tinubu over the criminal charges against activist Omoyele Sowore and social media platforms X and Facebook has everyone asking: just how powerful are these groups? Their power doesn't come from money or political office, but from a powerful mix of legal expertise, global influence, and a relentless commitment to holding the government accountable.
The recent event that put them in the spotlight started when the Department of State Services (DSS) filed a five-count criminal charge against Sowore and the social media companies. The charges were related to Sowore's posts criticizing President Tinubu, and they were based on laws like the Cybercrimes Act and the Criminal Code Act. In response, SERAP and Amnesty International Nigeria did not stay quiet. They joined forces and sent a strong joint letter directly to President Tinubu on September 20, 2025. They demanded he order the withdrawal of these charges, which they called a misuse of the judicial system to "silence dissent" .
So, where does their power to make such a demand come from? For SERAP, a major source of power is its legal expertise. SERAP is not just a group of activists; it is a team of legal experts dedicated to using the law to fight for transparency and accountability. As stated on its website, SERAP focuses on
promoting transparency and accountability in the use of Nigeria’s natural resourcesand
using human rights law to encourage the Nigerian government... to address... corruption, poverty, inequality and discrimination.They have a history of taking the government to court over huge issues, like a petition to the International Criminal Court about systemic corruption in Nigeria and a lawsuit over the alleged theft of $16 billion meant for electricity projects . This means when SERAP speaks about a law being misused, the government knows its arguments are backed by serious legal knowledge and a history of courtroom battles.
Amnesty International Nigeria brings a different kind of power to the table: the power of a global voice and moral authority. Amnesty International is a world-renowned human rights organization with a massive presence across the globe. When its Nigeria director, Isa Sanusi, speaks, international media and governments listen. This global reach allows Amnesty to shine an international spotlight on issues within Nigeria, which can pressure the government by damaging its reputation abroad. For example, Amnesty has published detailed reports on serious issues like the "rampant human rights violations" in Southeast Nigeria, where it documented thousands of killings , and the continued failure to support girls who were survivors of Boko Haram captivity . This ability to document and broadcast human rights abuses gives them immense moral power.
Together, these two organizations become a formidable team. SERAP provides the deep, local understanding of Nigerian law, while Amnesty provides the global megaphone. Their joint letter to Tinubu is a perfect example of this powerful combination. They didn't just make a moral plea; they used solid legal arguments, reminding the President of a 2022 ruling from the ECOWAS Court that found a part of Nigeria's cybercrime law "arbitrary and repressive" . They also cleverly quoted Tinubu's own Democracy Day speech back to him, where he said,
Call me names, call me whatever you will, and I will still call upon democracy to defend your right to do so.This shows a strategic power to hold leaders to their own promises.
Their power also comes from their sheer fearlessness and consistency. They are not afraid to take on the state's most powerful security agencies. The DSS has reportedly targeted SERAP itself, with operatives invading its office in 2024 and filing a lawsuit against the organization. Instead of backing down, SERAP and Amnesty fight back harder. They are currently supporting Sowore, who is himself counter-suing the DSS. This bravery builds tremendous credibility and trust with the Nigerian public, who see them as genuine defenders of their rights.
However, their power has limits. They can pressure the government, but they cannot force it to act. The government can choose to ignore their demands, and it often does. The very fact that the DSS continues to file these types of lawsuits against critics shows that the government is not always swayed. Furthermore, their work can be dangerous, as seen by the invasion of SERAP's office , proving that challenging powerful interests in Nigeria carries real risks.
In the end, the power of SERAP and Amnesty International Nigeria is not the kind that can instantly change a government's decision. It is a slower, more profound force. It is the power of the law, the power of truth, and the power of an unwavering voice for justice. Their recent action against the charges on Sowore demonstrates this power perfectly. They combine legal action, moral persuasion, and public advocacy to defend the fundamental right of every Nigerian to speak freely. As long as they continue to have the courage to speak truth to power, they will remain a crucial pillar for democracy and human rights in Nigeria.
