A fatal accident occurred on Friday, August 29, at Isalẹ Abiri in Ikoyi, Osun State, when a truck lost control and rammed into a motorcycle, killing the rider on the spot. The victim, identified as a technician, was reportedly on his way to install a solar system for a client before the tragic incident cut his journey short.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened in the afternoon when the truck, heavily loaded, developed a sudden brake failure. Its steering wheel also got stuck, leaving the driver unable to maneuver. The truck veered off its lane and crashed into the motorcyclist, dragging both man and machine to the ground.

Engineer Salim Olajide of Aslam Solar Tech, who witnessed the incident, recounted that the truck driver made frantic efforts to avoid the collision but had no control over the vehicle. He reported that:

the truck lost control of its brake and its steering became fixed, making it impossible to control. Unfortunately, it collided with the bike.

The victim, who was described by residents as hardworking and devoted, died instantly. Sympathizers gathered at the scene in shock as emergency responders later evacuated the body.

The accident has once again raised concerns over the safety of vehicles plying major roads in Osun State, especially trucks that often carry heavy loads. Road safety experts and concerned residents have called on drivers to conduct proper checks on their vehicles before setting out for work each day. They stressed that mechanical faults such as brake failure and steering lock are preventable with adequate maintenance and regular inspections.

Equally, the incident serves as a reminder to motorcyclists and pedestrians about the importance of prioritizing safety over right of way. In situations where vehicles appear to be out of control, escaping danger should come before standing ground or demanding road rights.

A recent accident at Apomu further highlights this issue. As reported by Fact Frontier News, a commercial bus in Apomu lost control due to brake failure, leading to several casualties and injuries. That case, like the Ikoyi tragedy, underscores how poor vehicle maintenance can turn routine journeys into disasters.

Authorities are urging drivers of trucks, buses, and commercial vehicles to ensure that their brakes, steering systems, and other critical components are in good condition before embarking on trips. Road safety is not only the responsibility of traffic agencies but also of every driver who shares the road.

The Isalẹ Abiri accident is a painful loss for the community and a sober reminder of the dangers of negligence on the road. As residents mourn the victim, the incident stands as a call for stricter adherence to safety checks and for all road users to remain vigilant at all times.
