In August 2025, Nigeria’s women’s rugby league team marked an important milestone in its global development journey as two of its brightest homegrown players, Rachel Iliya and Blessing Aladeyelu, officially joined English clubs.

Their transition was confirmed by assistant coach Luke Shearman in a statement published on August 22 2025, through NRL.com.

The announcement underscored not just their individual progress but also the strategic growth of Nigerian rugby league ahead of the Women’s Rugby League World Series scheduled to hold in Canada this October.

Rachel Iliya and Blessing Aladeyelu had long been standout athletes in Nigeria’s domestic women’s rugby league competitions.

Their technical ability, combined with resilience and tactical awareness, earned them the recognition of both national selectors and international scouts.

By joining English clubs in August 2025, they became part of a larger vision aimed at exposing Nigerian players to professional standards of training and competition.

According to the confirmation made on August 22, both players had already completed their moves to England earlier that month, effectively bridging domestic Nigerian rugby with one of the strongest rugby league environments in the world.

The decision to have these athletes participate in English club setups is both a short-term and long-term investment.

In the immediate sense, it enhances their match readiness for the Women’s Rugby League World Series in October, which is a qualifying tournament for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.

Nigeria’s participation in the World Series demands a mix of homegrown players and heritage players with Nigerian roots based overseas.

By giving Rachel Iliya and Blessing Aladeyelu access to English training facilities and competitive matches, the Nigerian team ensures they will enter the Canadian tournament sharper, more experienced, and more capable of matching global competition.

Long-term, the development of players like Iliya and Aladeyelu in England creates a pathway for younger athletes in Nigeria.

It signals to domestic players that hard work, discipline, and performance at the local level can result in opportunities abroad.

This visibility is critical for a sport that is still developing in Nigeria and across Africa, where rugby league has historically faced challenges of infrastructure and recognition.

The August 22 announcement explicitly acknowledged the role these players are expected to play, both as competitors on the field and as trailblazers for future Nigerian rugby league talents.

The Women’s Rugby League World Series in Canada this October will therefore serve as a test not only of Nigeria’s readiness for top-tier competition but also of how well its development strategy is paying off.

The integration of Rachel Iliya and Blessing Aladeyelu into English clubs ahead of the tournament offers Nigeria a stronger competitive edge.

More importantly, it strengthens Nigeria’s long-term aspirations of becoming a permanent fixture in global rugby league competitions.
