Seun Kuti, the Nigerian Afrobeat musician and son of the legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has issued a controversial revision of the widely held narrative surrounding his father's HIV status. During an Instagram livestream on April 5, 2026, Seun asserted that Fela Kuti was the victim of HIV transmission, having contracted the virus from one of his wives rather than being the source of infection.

The younger Kuti dismissed longstanding assumptions that his father had transmitted the virus to his many spouses. Instead, he argued that the women brought the infection into the household from external partners. "My father was the one who was affected," Seun stated, adding that Fela’s own lifestyle choices—specifically, his permissive stance on spousal fidelity—contributed to the outcome.

According to Seun, Fela did not prohibit his wives from maintaining romantic or sexual relationships with men outside the marriage. The only restriction, he explained, was that those partners were not permitted to enter Fela’s residence. Seun characterized this policy as one of his father's most significant errors in judgment. "It is one of the decisions I now consider a major misstep," he said during the livestream.

Seun further elaborated that while Fela enjoyed the freedom to engage with multiple women within his household, he rarely left his home to seek partners elsewhere. This asymmetry, Seun suggested, made it more likely that the virus was introduced by wives who had external liaisons.

The musician’s remarks have reignited debate regarding Fela Kuti’s complex personal life, which included 27 wives at various points and an openly non-monogamous domestic structure. Fela died in 1997 from complications related to AIDS, and for decades, public discourse has generally assumed that he transmitted the virus to his partners. Seun’s claim directly inverts that narrative.

Observers note that Seun has not provided medical documentation or third-party corroboration to support his assertion. Nevertheless, his comments have drawn significant attention on social media, with some applauding his defense of his father’s legacy and others questioning the veracity of the account.

As of April 6, 2026, no public response has been issued by other members of the Kuti family or by representatives of Fela’s surviving spouses. The matter remains a point of historical and cultural contention within Nigerian music circles.
