In a heart-wrenching start to the new year, a devastating overnight fire in the Old Mangu Market area has killed six siblings, extinguishing the lives of children aged between four months and 12 years. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of January 2, 2026, has cast a pall of mourning over the community and drawn national attention to recurring domestic fire tragedies.

The Night of the Fire

According to official reports from the Plateau State Police Command, the fire broke out around 2 a.m. at the family's residence. The sudden blaze trapped the six children inside while their mother, who was also home, fought desperately to save them. Neighbors, awakened by shouts and smoke, attempted to assist, but the intensity of the fire hampered rescue efforts.

The mother sustained severe, life-threatening burns in her heroic attempts and was rushed to a local hospital for emergency treatment. The children—brothers and sisters whose names have been withheld out of respect for the grieving family—could not be saved.

Official Response and Community Mourning

The tragedy prompted immediate visits from state and local government officials. Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, expressed profound grief, describing the incident as

a monumental loss not just to the family, but to the entire state.
He assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the fire.

Local council chairman, Hon. Markus Artu, who visited the scorched scene, echoed the sentiment, calling the event "a dark day for Mangu." He confirmed that the government was mobilizing support for the surviving mother and the extended family.

We are with them in this moment of unimaginable pain,
Artu stated, highlighting the community's collective shock.

The Investigation and Lingering Questions

As of early January, the precise cause of the fire remains undetermined and under active investigation by the police and fire authorities. Investigators are examining all possibilities, including electrical faults, a domestic accident, or other common triggers for such blazes.

Fire safety advocates in Nigeria have pointed to this tragedy as a stark reminder of pervasive risks. Many homes, especially in densely populated areas, lack basic fire safety measures such as functional smoke alarms and accessible fire extinguishers. The Plateau State fire service has historically been under-resourced, a common challenge across many Nigerian states that can delay response times and hamper effective firefighting.

A National Context of Fire Tragedies

The Mangu disaster occurred against a backdrop of other major fire incidents in Nigeria, underscoring a national safety crisis. Just days before, in late December 2025, a massive inferno engulfed the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building on Lagos Island. That commercial blaze, which raged for days and resulted in at least eight fatalities, was preliminarily attributed to "human error" involving the unsafe refueling of generators.
