A shadow of fear has fallen across the crucial Ikire-Apomu-Ikoyi to Egbeda corridor in Osun State, transforming a vital transportation artery into a nightmarish gauntlet for commuters, particularly those on commercial motorcycles. Our newsroom has received and verified alarming reports detailing a relentless wave of violent armed robberies along this route, incidents that have escalated from theft to outright murder, leaving communities traumatized and pleading for urgent government intervention.
The situation is not one of isolated crime, but of a systemic breakdown of security. According to numerous accounts from residents, motorists, and motorcycle riders, the stretch encompassing Iyana Water, Coca-Cola, and Egbeda has become a hunting ground for criminals who operate with brazen impunity. The modus operandi is consistently brutal: armed assailants, often riding in pairs on motorcycles, trail their targets, attack without warning, and show no hesitation to use lethal force.
The human cost of this insecurity is devastatingly captured in the testimony of one survivor, a man whose identity we are protecting for his safety. In a harrowing account, he revealed that he has been attacked twice on this very road. His second encounter with these highway marauders nearly cost him his life.
I was coming home from the farm,he recounted, his voice marked by the weight of the memory.
Suddenly, I noticed that a motorbike carrying two persons was trailing me. Even though I was not asked to pack, one of them just shot me in the head, in the jaw region.
The unprovoked violence left him with catastrophic injuries—a shattered mandible and multiple fractures—as he tumbled with his bike into a roadside bush. The cold-blooded nature of the attack is underscored by what followed.
The one who shot me picked up my bike and left while I was left helplessly,the victim stated. His story is not just one of physical trauma but of profound vulnerability; left bleeding and broken, his rescue was a matter of chance, not of prompt security response.
Our investigation confirms that this man’s agonizing experience is tragically commonplace. There are "countless" such reports, with a majority of these robberies culminating in killings. The road has become a symbol of peril, where the simple act of daily travel is a gamble with life and death. Motorcycle riders, who are the primary means of transport for many in these areas, are especially vulnerable. They carry cash from daily sales, and their motorcycles are valuable assets, making them prime targets. The attacks, however, are not limited to them; private commuters and businesspeople using the route have also fallen victim.
The psychological impact on the communities of Ikire, Apomu, Ikoyi, and Egbeda is profound. Economic activity is being stifled as people fear to travel after certain hours, and the social fabric is strained by collective anxiety. The farmlands that line this road, once a source of livelihood, now represent a zone of danger for those who work them. The vital connection this road provides to markets, schools, and healthcare facilities is now tainted by the threat of ambush.
This crisis points to a critical failure in intelligence gathering, proactive patrols, and rapid response by security agencies in the region. The repeated success of these criminals suggests they are familiar with the terrain and operate with a confidence that stems from a perceived absence of consequence. The community members we spoke to express a desperate sense of abandonment, wondering why a road plagued by such severe and frequent violence has not been flooded with a permanent security presence.
Therefore, Fact Frontier issues an urgent and unequivocal call to action. We appeal directly to the Government of Osun State, under the leadership of Governor Ademola Adeleke, and to all relevant security agencies—including the Nigeria Police Force, the Directorate of State Security, and the Amotekun Corps—to immediately deploy decisive measures to reclaim this road from the grips of terror.
We demand the establishment of fortified, round-the-clock security checkpoints and the initiation of consistent, armed patrols along the entire hotspot corridor. Furthermore, we urge the state government to empower local community policing initiatives with necessary support and intelligence resources. The people of Osun State have a fundamental right to safe passage on public roads. The current state of affairs on the Ikire-Egbeda road is a stark violation of that right.
The story of the man shot in the jaw is a testament to human resilience, but it must also serve as the final alarm. It is unacceptable for citizens to sustain life-altering injuries and witness their neighbors being killed simply for traveling a public highway. The government must act now, not with promises, but with visible, effective, and sustained force, to restore safety, dignity, and peace to the people of this region. The time for intervention is long overdue.
